Tonight we have a close win for the residents of Aerie. In an under-researched foray into canning apple butter we have walked away with most of four pints (or three and a half depending on your point of view), a kitchen with a thin veneer of sticky all over the place, multiple burn marks(thank you hvbris burn kit), and an amazing sense of accomplishment.

One question; if the jars do not immediately seal, can we put them in a pressure cooker tomorrow to get them to seal?

We'll see how long it lasts. ;)

I could not make myself go back to sleep this morning when the girl woke me repeatedly, like she does regularly. I laid there feeling super sleepy and knowing it hadn't been all that long ago that I laid down after the apple butter exploration. I then reminded myself that the Cities 97 Sampler only comes out one day a year, that I always love the music, that you can't get the recordings anywhere else, and that I would be kicking myself for a long while if I went back to sleep and didn't get one when I had been awake and able to go get it. I got up.

This is the third one I have gotten up to go and get. $25 to charity and I get a bunch of awesome tracks. Hooray massage playlist.

I then remembered that I need to pick things up and managed to find some things I have been needing for the business. I checked up on paper "foils" for bleaching hair sans metal, they didn't have them long enough for my hair. I looked at frames for a few photos that I want to give as gifts, decided that I need to get them printed in ideal sizes and then look for the right frame rather than the other way around.

to-do list )

I need to see about getting a new phone, new phone number and one of those square scanner things that Berkie was talking about at the pub. Research time.

How is our system using fear to manipulate people any different than terrorists? We pay them to do it.

TSA requires these machines to have the ability to store images and transmit them to remote locations, "But we won't turn that function on! We promise."

Better yet, on the international scene, "We won't print these images out and share them around because we have integrity and you should trust us on that."

US Airways Pilots Association President Mike Cleary has advised ALL of his pilots to avoid the new procedures when possible stating health reasons and worry that there has already been a sexual molestation incident, wait for it..., with a pilot.
"The words this pilot used to describe the incident included 'sexual molestation,' and in the aftermath of trying to recover, this pilot reported that he had literally vomited in his own driveway while contemplating going back to work and facing the possibility of a similar encounter with the TSA," Cleary said.

And President Cleary brings up the excellent point of health risks. Looking at the two different types of scanners we have the millimeter wave scanner(using teraherts or THz waves), and the backscanner(low level x-rays). Millimeter wave scanners are interesting. The science follows here; "the resonant effects allow THz waves to unzip double-stranded DNA, creating bubbles in the double strand that could significantly interfere with processes such as gene expression and DNA replication." One scientist pointed out that they are perilously close to ionizing radiation.
http://www.technologyreview.com/blog/arxiv/24331/ Then there is the low level x-rays they are calling backscanners. When I get a medical x-ray I have lead protection for the parts of me likely to be caused cancer because of the radiation. I can remember one Dr visit during a particularly accident prone year in high school when he looked at my chart and said, "I'm not going to order an x-ray for this. Your ovaries have had enough radiation this year." I fly a lot more than I need medical x-rays but I do get them and yes it is cumulative. Then I start to wonder about the protections involved for the people running these machines. *sigh*

Up your anti-oxidant intake people. And write your congressperson. These types of "security procedures" should not be allowed to continue. They are ineffective and disproportionately invasive.
